History
Mr. Chico Vaughn affectionately know as "Chico", was the first African American to play basketball for the Ohio State University. Chico, regrettably was unable to enjoy this great accomplishment to the fullest because he endured heinous acts of torment due to racism. Chico's experiences with racism did not leave him bitter but drove him wanting to help kids, he wanted to make sure no other kid would ever have to go through the same tribulations as he did. In 1979 he brought together over 140 kids of all race and creed for his first camp, which started the infamous "Chico Vaughn Basketball Camp". He wanted his camps to be more then learning to play basketball, he wanted to teach responsible life lessons. So he began to mentor youths inside and outside the lines, throughout Northwest Ohio. To date his camps have helped over 25000 kids, many from impoverished and low income communities. Chico's camps not only produced great athletes, but many lawyers, officers, entrepreneurs, teachers, coachers and more. He turned bitterness, hatred and unjust into strength, empowerment and leadership. He continued to do this until he passed in 2010.
